Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:  Knowledge of: specific curriculum content for subject area, child and adolescent behavior, counseling techniques, and child and adolescent development.  Skilled in: lesson plan development, implementation of learning activities, behavior management, assessment, and teaching to individual student skill levels.  Ability to: communicate orally and in writing in both Spanish and English; use technology to support counseling work; and build relationships with students, parents, and staff.

 

Experience:  Experience with student counseling preferred but not required.

 

Education:  Completion of a higher education Master’s degree in education/counseling/teaching.

 

Certification Required:  A valid personnel service school counselor license issued by the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assist students with personal problems affecting their education.
  2. Identify and address special needs.
  3. Provide information regarding alternatives, probable consequences, and decision-making skills.
  4. Refer students/parents appropriately.
  5. Advise teachers and administrators of special situations and problems as appropriate.
  6. Work with students, parents, teachers, and administrators to find positive solutions to problems that interfere with scholastic success.
  7. Encourage and reinforce positive efforts of students directed at self-improvement through development of goals and action plans.
  8. Work with appropriate social service agencies to meet specific student needs.
  9. Assist students, parents, teachers, and administrators in finding reasonable compromises when crises arise.
  10. Assist students with course selection and program planning.
  11. Assist in scheduling classes.
  12. Assist in planning student’s alternative education activities as appropriate.
  13. Attempt to meet with each assigned student at least once per year.
  14. Administer tests as needed.
  15. Assist in classroom instruction in special topic areas.
  16. Act as student advocate with teachers, administrators, and parents.
  17. Participate as appropriate in district programs, i.e., IMPACT, testing committee, etc.
  18. Encourage students to work toward the realization of their potential.
  19. Assist students in developing human relationship skills.
  20. Address the special needs of “at-risk” students.
  21. Provide group counseling options when appropriate.
  22. Maintain confidentiality as required by law.
  23. Coordinate the district testing program for the building.
  24. Assist with registration, orientation, and placement of students.
  25. Interpret student records to students, parents, and staff.
  26. Translate documents as required.
  27. Confer with parents concerning student progress.
  28. Maintain student records as directed by state standards and local district policy.
  29. Assist in the interpretation of test results for students, parents, teachers, and administrators.
  30. Participate in the special education process according to district guidelines.
  31. Refer students for guidance services as appropriate.
  32. Support and provide career guidance activities.
  33. Participate in meetings, conferences, and workshops as appropriate to ensure professional growth and development.
  34. Perform other duties as assigned.

CLASSIFICATION:                    

Full time, Probationary, Mountain View Middle School.

 

CALENDAR/BENEFITS:

8 hours per day; prorated days of 190 day 2023-2024 contract starting February 15, 2024 or immediately upon hire after February 15, 2024. 

 

Salary range $46,642 - $95,909 prorated by days remaining in contract year. Newberg Public Schools pays 6% PERS contribution, provides a generous insurance cap, long-term disability and life insurance.
